Rai worked as a model while in college. After appearing in several television commercials, she competed in the Miss India pageant, finishing second. She was then crowned Miss World 1994, and she began receiving film offers. Her first Hindi film, Aur Pyaar Ho Gaya, was released the same year. Her first commercial success was the romantic drama Jeans (1998), She achieved wider acclaim and won two Filmfare Best Actress awards for her performances in Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam (1999) and Devdas (2000).

In 2007, Rai married actor Abhishek Bachchan, with whom she has one daughter. Her off-screen responsibilities include serving as a brand ambassador for several charitable organizations and campaigns. She was the first Indian actress to serve on the Cannes Film Festival jury in 2003.

A career as an actor:

Rai made her acting debut in Mani Ratnam’s Tamil film Iruvar in 1997, a semi-biographical political drama starring Mohanlal, Prakash Raj, Tabu, and Revathi. The film was a big success, winning the Film award.

Rai’s role in the romantic drama Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam in 1999 marked a watershed moment in her career. Sanjay Leela Bhansali directed the film, which was based on Maitreyi Devi’s Bengali novel Na Hanyate and starred Salman Khan and Ajay Devgan. She portrayed Nandini, a Gujarati woman who is forced into marriage (with Devgan’s character) despite being in love with another man (played by Khan). Bhansali cast Rai after meeting her at a film screening and being impressed by her eyes. Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam became a huge commercial success, earning Rai a Filmfare Award for Best Actress.

Rai then appeared in the action drama Josh alongside Shah Rukh Khan and Chandrachur Singh. Shirley Dias, Khan’s twin sister who falls in love with his arch enemy’s brother, was played by her. Despite receiving mixed reviews from critics, Josh was a commercial success. But it is her transformation from an emotional wreck trying to piece together the broken pieces of her life that are amazing.” Rai was eventually nominated for a third time for Best Actress at Filmfare.

Rai took on a supporting role in Aditya Chopra’s ensemble romance Mohabbatein after starring in the box office flop Dhai Akshar Prem Ke. Mohabbatein was the year’s second highest-grossing film, earning Rai a Filmfare Award nomination for Best Supporting Actress.

Devdas and international recognition (2002–2007):

Following her appearance in David Dhawan’s slapstick comedy Hum Kisise Kum Nahin, Rai co-starred with Shah Rukh Khan and Madhuri Dixit in Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s love-saga Devdas, an adaptation of Sharat Chandra Chattopadhyay’s novel of the same name. She portrayed Paro (Parvati), the protagonist’s love interest (played by Khan). The film premiered at the 2002 Cannes Film Festival and was named one of Time’s “ten best films of the millennium.” In India, the film received ten Filmfare Awards, including Rai’s second Best Actress award.

Rai then co-starred in the 2005 adult drama Shabd, alongside Sanjay Dutt and Zayed Khan, about an author who convinces his wife to pursue an illicit relationship with a younger man to research his next book. The film received mostly negative reviews and was a commercial flop. She reminds me of a picture postcard you get when you were expecting a letter. It’s lovely to look at, but it’s useless because it says nothing.” That same year, Rai starred as Tilo in Paul Mayeda Berges’ romantic fantasy film The Mistress of Spices, based on Chitra Banerjee Divakaruni’s novel of the same name.

Jodhaa Akbar and other roles (2008–2010):

After a string of underperforming films, both critically and commercially, Rai found critical and box-office success with Ashutosh Gowariker’s period romance Jodhaa Akbar (2008). The film tells the story of a marriage of convenience between Mughal emperor Jalaluddin Muhammad Akbar (played by Hrithik Roshan) and Rajput princess Jodha Bai (played by Rai). “Aishwarya Rai is wonderfully restrained and uses her eyes expertly to communicate so much, making this one of her finest outings on screen,” said Rajeev Masand.

Work after sabbatical (2015–present):

Rai’s final release of 2016 was Karan Johar’s romantic drama Ae Dil Hai Mushkil, in which she co-starred with Ranbir Kapoor and Anushka Sharma as Saba, a poet.
