Born to conservative Gujarati parents, the actress has been a trained Bharatnatyam dancer since the age of five. She is the sister of Ashmit Patel, who has also starred in a few commercial successes. Having famous lawyer-politician Barrister Rajni Patel as her grandfather, Ameesha, too, followed his footsteps in pursuing her higher studies from Tufts University in the United States.

In 1999, Patel met filmmaker Vikram Bhatt on the set of Aap Mujhe Ache Lagne Lage (2002). As the speculation on the possible marriage was going on, Patel sent a legal notice to her father in the year 2004.
Amidst the strained family dynamic, in the year 2008, the five-year relationship broke. With the parent’s willingness to reconcile, their relationship continued to remain stressed. Love bloomed again in the year 2008 with Kanav Puri, a London-based businessman. But the long-time relationship ended in 2010 as Patel wanted to focus on her career.
