Ameesha Patel Early Life

Born to conservative Gujarati parents, the actress has been a trained Bharatnatyam dancer since the age of five. She is the sister of Ashmit Patel, who has also starred in a few commercial successes. Having famous lawyer-politician Barrister Rajni Patel as her grandfather, Ameesha, too, followed his footsteps in pursuing her higher studies from Tufts University in the United States.

Making her shift from Bio-genetic engineering to Economics and eventually dropping her job as an economic analyst at Khandwala Securities Limited after graduation, she joined Satyadev Dubey’s theatre group. Alongside she took several commercial campaigns and also modeled for well-known brands like Lux, Cadbury’s, Fem, and many more.

Acting Career

Ameesha Patel’s first opportunity to act came right after she graduated from high school. Rakesh Roshan, her father’s schoolmate, wanted her to star opposite his son Hrithik Roshan in Kaho Na Pyaar Hai. Initially, refusing the offer to pursue her higher studies, she readily accepted the role later on when Kareena Kapoor, luckily, dropped out.

Receiving the highest gross of the year, the movie entered the Guinness World Records and Limca Book of Records for being a feature film with the most awards. This collaboration of father-son also won Rakesh Roshan his first ever Filmfare award. Later, in the year 2000, she starred in a Telugu drama Badri which was also a major success.

The year 2001 was also a smashing success with Gadar: Ek Prem Katha. It became the top-grossing film of the year and also won her Filmfare Special Performance Award. Her fifth film Humraaz, followed by three flops again, won her Filmfare Actress Award. The subsequent years saw the struggle phase and her renewed success in 2007 in Priyadarshan’s  Bhool Bhulaiyaa. After delayed and shelved projects, Ameesha Patel launched her own production company in the year 2011.

She made a comeback in the year 2013 with a special appearance in Abbas-Mustan’s Race 2. Followed by poorly performed and mixed reviews movies, she entered the reality show Big Boss 13 in the year 2013. With several stage performances and world tours to her credit, she joined PETA in the year 2004. Additionally, she performed at Help! Telethon Concert to raise money for the 2004 Earthquake victims and also joined an NGO called PlanetRead. 

Personal Life And Controversies

In 1999, Patel met filmmaker Vikram Bhatt on the set of Aap Mujhe Ache Lagne Lage (2002). Later, the relationship between the Bhatt and Patel families was strained as Patel’s father drove her into a financial crisis. As the speculation on the possible marriage was going on, Patel sent a legal notice to her father in the year 2004.

Amidst the strained family dynamic, in the year 2008, the five-year relationship broke. With the parent’s willingness to reconcile, their relationship continued to remain stressed. Love bloomed again in the year 2008 with Kanav Puri, a London-based businessman. But the long-time relationship ended in 2010 as Patel wanted to focus on her career.
