- Jerry “The King” Lawler took part in another debate on Tuesday for Memphis mayoral race, which will be decided next month. Lawler called out front-runner A.C. Wharton for skipping the debate, which was sponsored by the National Association of Women Business Owners. Lawler received positive media attention from the debate and his comments about Wharton skipping the debate were one of the key soundbytes played during Tuesday’s WREG evening news. MEMPHIS, Tenn. – A Memphis Resident says, “Wow Jerry Lawler running for mayor but you have got to be kidding.” It wouldn’t be the first time he’s run. In 1999 Lawler ran for mayor winning nearly 12-percent of the votes, but was taken down easily by current mayor Willie Herenton. On FM 100’s Morning Show with Ron Olson and Dana Fox Monday morning Lawler pointed towards another possible run for Memphis Mayor. Like a title match of Memphis wrestling, the news of The King’s possible bid spread quickly across the Mid-South. A Memphis voter says, “You’ve got to say he loves Memphis ’cause he still lives here.” Ron and Dana say with a name like Lawler and popularity across the city, it’s a win win for The King. Ron Olson & Dana Fox say, “Of course he has name recognition going for him too that’s what it’s all about when you’re running for office its name recognition and he’s got it.” Across town the news of a possible run was met with mixed reaction. A Memphis Resident says, “I don’t know too much about his political background for Jerry Lawler I’d really have to think hard about that one.” Political journalist Mike Fleming says if Lawler runs his candidacy will directly impact the special election and other candidates running, but says his name says it all. Fleming says, “It’s the oldest game in politics, name recognition can carry you when you don’t know one issue from the other.” Other mayoral candidates include AC Wharton, Jim Strickland, Carol Chumney, Myron Lowery, Kenneth Whalum, James Harvey, Kemp Conrad and Edmund Ford Sr.
